There are a lot of differences in opinion about the origin of the game that we know of Poker, one reason is because there seems to be no clear ancestor of the game. More than likely Poker as we know it today probably comes from many different games. A man named Jonathan Green makes one of the earliest written references to Poker in 1834, in his writing he mentions rules to what he called the cheating game that was being played on Mississippi River Boats. The game as he described it was then played with 20 cards, using only the aces, kings, queens, jacks, and tens. Two to four people could play this game, and each one of them was dealt five cards. By the time Mr. Green wrote about this it was the number one cheating game on the boats, it was getting more action than three cards Monte.
A lot of people that were lured in by three card Monte thought that 20 Card Poker seemed to be a more legitimate game and they just kept coming back for more and more. So basically the game is thought to have come about by cheaters. No matter where the game actually originated it has turned out to be the most popular type of game that has ever been played. Of course there are a few changes that have been made to the game since the time talked about above. Now the game is made up of using 52 cards but each player is still originally dealt five cards and then things go from there depending on the different game that you decide to play. Mr. Green has brought us one of the most exciting games in the world and today it is one of the most profitable games in the world no matter what form you choose to play.
There are only so many words that you can use to explain the origin and history of poker, all you have to do to enjoy yourself is to start to play and go from there. Now that you know where the game comes from you can appreciate that the game is steeped in history and will continue to make games great for players for the rest of time.
